Vallejo Employees Serve Breakfast to Hungry Students
AAA volunteers also donate food, provide homework help
AAA employees from the Vallejo branch are helping dozens of children get their school day off to a better start with a nutritious, hot meal.
The Vallejo Middle School students come from across the city — on foot and in buses to First Presbyterian Church where they're served free pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, bagels and all the fixings before heading across the street to school.
"Many of these kids walk several miles across Vallejo in the dark," said David Sessler, member services supervisor in Vallejo. "They eat two or three times in the morning before they leave. It's really eye-opening."
AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah now sponsors Wednesdays at the Breakfast Club.
Each week, AAA sends a handful of employees to the church to prepare and serve breakfast from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Costco and other local businesses, including AAA, donate food for the program, which has served more than 84,000 meals to local school children since its inception in 1993.
Volunteers assist with homework
While the students are eating, volunteers and staffers ask whether anyone has a test to prepare for or homework to finish.
"The only way this program survives is by the support of the community and local businesses," Sessler said.
Kimberly Nelson, a 12-year AAA employee, was one of the first to volunteer on March 18, what's expected to be the first of many AAA Wednesdays.
"It was a great program, the kids were great. They were all very polite and enjoyed the food," said Nelson, who's the mother of two young children. "I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to going back again. Even though it's tough to get up, it's well worth it."
