Board Service Grant Guidelines
Guidelines Question: Who is eligible to apply for a Board Service Grant?
Answer: All active, full-time AAA NCNU employees are eligible to apply for grants. Employees must be employed at AAA for at least 3 months. Part-time, past employees, retirees and/or family members are not eligible to participate in this program.
Question: Where can a Board Service Grant application form be obtained?
Answer: Application forms can be obtained at www.aaavolunteers.org or by contacting Loren Brown at 925-279-4817.
Question: Does an employee currently need to be a board member of the organization for which a grant is being applied?
Answer: Yes. An employee must be an active board member of an eligible non-profit community service organization.
Question: I am not on the board, but serve on an advisory board or committee. Does that count?
Answer: No. You must be on the Board of Directors to apply for a Board Service Grant. If you are volunteering your time on an advisory board or committee, you may instead be eligible for a Dollars for Doers grant.
Question: What types of organizations are considered eligible for this program?
Answer: Grants are restricted to tax-exempt, non-profit, community-based 501 (c)(3) organizations. Organizations that do not have or are in the process of obtaining their tax-exempt status are not eligible for this program.
Question: What types of organizations are considered ineligible for this program?
Answer: Organizations that are not eligible are profit-making organizations, strictly religious organizations, and political, labor and fraternal organizations. Organizations primarily supported by tax revenues or those focused on athletics or recreation -- such as town recreation programs will not normally be eligible.
Any organization that discriminates on the basis of race, religious creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, national origin, ancestry, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, genetic characteristics, pregnancy, veteran status, marital status or any other category prohibited by state or federal law, is not eligible.
Question: What type of information needs to be supplied regarding the employee's board involvement with the organization?
Answer: When an employee submits their application, they must show documentation (organization letterhead, website, etc.) listing their name as being a current board member. The non-profit organization must also verify the active participation of the board member.
Question: How much will AAA donate?
Answer: Depending on the employee's current job title, the grant amounts start at $500.
Question: I am on the board of two non-profit organizations. Can I apply for a grant for each organization?
Answer: No. There is a limit of one organization per employee per calendar year.
Question: Are there any geographic limitations to the donation?
Answer: In most cases, organizations receiving donations from AAA must be tax-exempt, non-profit institutions located and operating in California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and Oklahoma.
Question: In addition to my board involvement, I also volunteer additional time at that organization. Can I apply for a Dollars for Doers grant, too?
Answer: No. An employee serving on a board can only utilize the AAA Board Service Grant program for that organization.
Question: Can I complete both a Dollars for Doers application and a Board Service Grant application for the same non-profit organization in a calendar year?
Answer: No. You must choose one program or the other (which ever is most appropriate.)
Question: How does the organization receive the Board Service Grant money?
Answer: After the grant application has been received and approved, the check will be forwarded directly to the non-profit organization. The employee will receive a copy of the letter for their records.
